Navigation Training

The Lake District is a stunning area, perfect for navigation training with its wide variety of mountain terrain and features. The Cumbrian mountains experience contrasting weather systems and this provides excellent 'real' conditions in which to learn. All of our courses are practical and we spend the full duration out in the mountain environment teaching you navigation skills.

Here is a sample of the skills we teach:

  1. Maps and scales
  2. Understanding contours
  3. Grid references
  4. Conventional signs
  5. Identifying features on the ground and the map
  6. How to use a compass
  7. Taking and following bearings
  8. Resections & back bearings
  9. Aiming off and boxing
  10. Aspect of slope techniques
  11. Distance, pacing and timings
  12. Day and night navigation
  13. Winter navigation skills
  14. Navigation in total white out conditions
  15. Altimeters
  16. GPS Training

Being able to navigate confidently and accurately is an essential skill if you are to venture into remote terrain whether it is mountains or moorland environments with limited features. Too many people simply rely on GPS alone and this can be a major issue as they can break or simply the batteries run out! Knowing how to use a map and compass is not a black art, you will quickly find that navigation is not that hard.
